Some things really do happen too close to home. Early this morning, an 18-year-old girl was killed in a single vehicle accident down near Clonakilty at 5am, only a matter of minutes from my house. I was oblivious to this news until 8.30am this morning, when Mam informed me of the accident. She had received calls from family members wondering if she had heard the news. Since it was so close to home, everyone is always concerned as to whether our own children and/or relations were safe and well. After [...]
Glamorous Unemployment
I have a phrase for the standard “you didn’t get the job” rejection email. It’s called the “Dear John”. It usually consists of lovely flowery phrases such as “Thank you for your interest but..” or “We are unable to progress your application…” or “The position has been filled”. I’ve experienced great frustration over the last 12 months and longer in trying to find even 2 or 3 hours work a week, doing pretty much anything. Heck, I’d even apply to open a cardboard box. I’ve had absolutely no success and [...]
Limerick need Athlone favour to go up
Limerick FC’s faint promotion hopes are out of their hands heading into the Airtricity League First Division’s final round of matches this Saturday, October 29. The Super Blues currently sit fourth in the table, a solitary point behind Monaghan. With Shelbourne having already sealed automatic promotion and Cork City’s goal difference far greater, Limerick will need to beat Waterford at Jackman Park and hope Monaghan drop points when they travel to Athlone Town. Even then, they will need to overcome Galway in a two leg promotion playoff. Limerick increased their [...]
More Axe Factor than X Factor?
So it seems that this year’s X Factor isn’t attracting the hype that was anticipated. As you all probably know by now, three new judges were introduced to the show – Gary Barlow (Take That), Kelly Rowland (formerly of Destiny’s Child) and Tulisa Contostavlos (N’Dubz), with the ever reliable Louis Walsh also invited back for yet another year. Everyone thought that these three new faces would inject some life, vibrancy and indeed passion to the show – however, the ratings don’t reflect this. Since the show began airing this season, [...]
Occupy Dame Street: inside report
On Saturday 22nd October, I attended the Occupy Dame Street protest to get an insider’s account of the march and the general aim of the demonstration. The march took place at 2:00pm from the Garden of Remembrance and ended at Central Bank on Dame Street, where a general assembly was held… As I looked down at my phone to check the time, I noticed that I was more than 20 minutes late for this weekly march. Hurrying down O’Connell Street, I was afraid I wouldn’t have time to take a [...]
Your Problems Solved by Sorcha Ni Shuilleabhain Age 9
Dear Sorcha, Although I’m brilliant in every way and have always been an over-achiever, I can’t seem to attract the attention in class, of the male lecturer who’s taking this term’s most important module; ‘Employees and How To Mess With Their Heads’. Short of offering oral, I don’t really know what I’m supposed to do to get ahead. Do you think there’s any strategy I can adopt which doesn’t involve me putting his you-know-what in my you-know-where? Louisa MSc Occupational Psychology UL Dear Louisa, It’s difficult to be best in [...]
Is UL the hardest uni to obtain the magic 2:1 degree?
AN Irish Times survey recently revealed that the University of Limerick is the most difficult university to obtain a high degree from. The paper stated that an analysis of degree awards in the seven Irish universities since 2005 showed huge variations in the proportions of students receiving top degrees. Students who attend Trinity College, for example, are far more likely to graduate with a 2:1 than those who choose University of Limerick – bad news for us UL-goers! Nowadays, due to the current economic climate, final year students find themselves [...]
Is it a bird..is it a plane? No, it may be a satellite!!
The German Aerospace Centre has said that pieces of a retired German satellite hurtling towards the atmosphere may crash to Earth this weekend. Scientists initially estimated that the satellite would hit between a four day time span, but have now whittled it down to either this coming Saturday or Sunday. The satellite is the size of a minibus, and parts will burn up during re-entry, but as many as 30 fragments, weighing a total of 1.87 tons, could crash into the Earth at up to 280mph. It orbits the Earth [...]
Be part of a world record attempt this Saturday?
ATTENTION ALL ADRENALIN JUNKIES!! This Saturday, November 22, will see students from the University of Limerick, along with UL Campaign and Services Officer, Paddy Rockett, attempt to break a world record. The dedicated bunch will be living in the Dublin Eye for a massive 24 hours and 10 minutes in an effort to raise money for a very worthy cause – The Bone Marrow for Leukaemia Trust. Speaking to Paddy this week in the lead up to the event, he remarked on how nervous he was about taking part: “To [...]
Your Problems Solved by Sorcha Ni Shuilleabhain Age 9
Dear Sorcha, I’ve just started a business studies degree at UL and I seem to have attracted the attentions of another business studies 1st Yr, who I’m also sharing halls with. Unfortunately, she’s from a remote part of Donegal that I can’t even pronounce and is a bit dim. She insists on canvassing for Dana and has plastered Dana posters all over our apartment, which has now become a destination for cheap laughs for all. I can’t shake her off and she’s been asking me questions like, where do babies [...]
