Is UL the hardest uni to obtain the magic 2:1 degree?

AN Irish Times survey recently revealed that the University of Limerick is the most difficult university to obtain a high degree from.

The paper stated that an analysis of degree awards in the seven Irish universities since 2005 showed huge variations in the proportions of students receiving top degrees.

Students who attend Trinity College, for example, are far more likely to graduate with a 2:1 than those who choose University of Limerick – bad news for us UL-goers!

Nowadays, due to the current economic climate, final year students find themselves under increasing pressure to succeed in their exams, with many employers demanding a 2:1 degree or higher, before a job application will be even considered.

According to the survey, DCU had the highest first-class honours rate (18 percent), while UCD were awarded the lowest proportion of first-class honours, obtaining just 11 percent.

However, the biggest fluctuations occurred in the 2:1 category – 53 percent of Trinity College graduates made the grade, with their statistic reading 8 percent over the national average.

In comparison, the 2:1 rate for UL was 34 percent, which is 9 percent below the national average – not only that, but it’s a staggering 19 percent below Trinity.

When discussing the proportion of 2:2 degrees awarded, most universities hovered between the 20 and 25 percent mark; however, UL and NUI Maynooth were both well above the national average of 24 percent, with an impressive 32 percent of graduates from each institution gaining a 2:2.

Here is what the Irish Times wrote about UL:

University of Limerick

Judging by its award rate over the time period, UL is one of the most difficult universities from which to gain a high honours degree. Fourteen per cent of its graduates gained first-class honours, while 34 per cent achieved a 2:1. This 2:1 rate is by far the lowest in the country, a full 19 per cent behind the highest, which is TCD, and 9 per cent below the national average.

The proportion of students receiving 2:2 degrees is well above the national average, by contrast, at 32 per cent. The high proportion of 2:2s means that UL’s honours rate is 80 per cent overall. Fourteen per cent of students were awarded pass degrees; the remaining 6 per cent did not receive degrees.

[...] http://limerick.studenty.me/2011/10/22/is-ul-really-the-hardest-irish-university-to-obtain-the-magic…/   Here’s a quote from the study (carried out by the Irish Times): “Fourteen per cent of its (UL) graduates gained first-class honours, while 34 per cent achieved a 2:1. This 2:1 rate is by far the lowest in the country, a full 19 per cent behind the highest, which is TCD, and 9 per cent below the national average”.  Flash back to the later part of the last century when I was a graduate of that same institution (UL).  There were approximately 200 of us business graduates.  5 achieved a first class honours.  That’s 2.5%.  Enough said.
