Where Instagram becomes Instakidney and Farmville is Organville. Facebook’s new sharing option – organs

Where Instagram becomes Instakidney and Farmville is Organville. Facebook’s new sharing option – organs

Forgive the rather lame title but I felt I had to go out on a limb on this one. Facebook, the social media behemoth, is grabbing the corporate responsibility bull by the horns. They have announced plans to allow members (who are approaching a formidable one billion in strength) in the United States and the UK to “share” their organ donation preference. Ireland nor many other countries will not immediately have access, but it is likely this unexpected feature will spread like Timeline. Mark Zuckerberg and Co. believe this move will encourage members to [...]

Here are ten to make you laugh and think this Sunday. 1. Speaking of exams, they can’t be avoided. (Unless you’re an Arts student, boom boom). Jane Kearns arms you with the A to Z of exams. 2. Mass greyhound grave discovered in Limerick

Mass greyhound grave discovered in Limerick

A mass grave containing the bodies of several greyhounds was discovered in Co Limerick. The unburied bodies are believed to be those of former racing greyhounds and were discovered by a walker in a former quarry about 40 kilometers south east of Limerick city. Limerick Animal Welfare carried out an initial investigation of the site and located the bodies of seven or eight dogs, all greyhounds. The bodies of the dogs were in various stages of decay, indicating that some died more recently than others. The organisation has not ruled [...]

What the hell is a ‘fiscal compact’?

What the hell is a ‘fiscal compact’?

Nearly two weeks ago, An Taoiseach Enda Kenny announced the date for the upcoming referendum on the EU fiscal compact treaty. It’ll be May 31, a Thursday, always an inconvenient day for students. It’s fair to say that most of the talk around the referendum is like double-dutch to those of us without degrees in economics. So what exactly are we voting on next month? What is a ‘fiscal compact’? Good question. The fiscal compact is basically a name for the treaty which was signed by all EU nations apart [...]

USI Annual Congress: Day Three

USI Annual Congress: Day Three

Student representatives at the USI Annual Congress have voted in favour of the renegotiation of the Croke Park Agreement, to defer the vote on the Union’s policy on third level fees, and elected John Logue (UCDSU) as President Gary Redmond’s successor. Yesterday, students voted 126 to 34 in favour of the renegotiation of the Croke Park Agreement. The Agreement was introduced in 2010 and amongst its implications is that public servants shall suffer no further pay reductions until 2014. Because of this, up to 80% of third level funding is [...]

University of Limerick students have called for a boycott of The Sun newspaper

University of Limerick students have called for a boycott of The Sun newspaper

Thomond Student Times, a student-run newspaper on campus, has organised an online petition urging O’Mahony’s Bookshop to stop stocking the tabloid. It follows on from last week’s report in the newspaper which linked charity events in UL to anti-social behaviour. The report used an image of Sean O’Gorman, a participant in the Nearly Naked Mile, to highlight the “party time” enjoyed by UL students. It then went on to list reports of damage done to the College Court estate in Castletroy. UL students are furious at the misrepresentation. Evana Downes, [...]

Opinion: Say yes to a sensible Treaty debate

Opinion: Say yes to a sensible Treaty debate

Andrew Haworth analyses the upcoming referendum, and asks what is democratic about political parties and interest groups scaring the people into voting one way or the other? On the 28th of February, the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, announced to the Dáil and the listening public, that the EU Fiscal Compact Treaty would require a referendum following legal advice from the Attorney-General. Immediately following this announcement, the unofficial campaigns of those in favour and against began. Social media was engulfed with opinions, arguments and links to sources to back up various claims. Current affairs shows on [...]

Offaly County Councillor’s Son Accused of Hacking

Offaly County Councillor’s Son Accused of Hacking

19-year old Offaly student Donncha O’Cearrbhail, who goes by the online avatars ‘palladium’, ‘polonium’ and ‘anonsacco’, could spend up to 15 years in prison and face possible extradition to the United States, if successfully convicted of recording a privileged discussion between Scotland Yard and the FBI. He was arrested on Tuesday in Dublin and brought to Terenure Garda Station, where he can be held for 24 hours without charge. The teleconference, which O’Cearrbhail is alleged to have hacked into and recorded on the 17 January using access details obtained from an insecure [...]

Studenty Sunday: ALL THE THINGS Edition

Studenty Sunday: ALL THE THINGS Edition

Every week Roisin Peddle takes a look at the top ten stories making the headlines at Studenty.me through the week. My limited imagination struggled with a title for this week’s Studenty Sunday, which covers stories ranging from chuggers in Dublin to kidnapping in Darfur. Well, as someone once said, “The easiest way to become popular is to leech off the popularity of others.” In that spirit, I present a meme-inspired Studenty Sunday! 1. *Sucess baby* 2012 looks to be another great year for gaming, and Darran Goggin previews five games [...]
