Donna Dunne, ‘Woman in Black’ “I just don’t sing like Johnny Cash, I’ll be that woman in black” Donna Dunne sings on ‘Woman in Black’, and this is true. And probably just as well. The reference to Cash is fitting. Dunne’s music is strewn with Cash’s spirit, seeped in a rich tradition of Rockabilly and Blue Moon of Kentucky-era Elvis. These are her musical roots. Cash would have approved of the trumpet and double bass providing accompaniment here — he would have said that they’re “really cookin’” — and he [...]
Studenty Sunday: ALL THE THINGS Edition
Every week Roisin Peddle takes a look at the top ten stories making the headlines at Studenty.me through the week. My limited imagination struggled with a title for this week’s Studenty Sunday, which covers stories ranging from chuggers in Dublin to kidnapping in Darfur. Well, as someone once said, “The easiest way to become popular is to leech off the popularity of others.” In that spirit, I present a meme-inspired Studenty Sunday! 1. *Sucess baby* 2012 looks to be another great year for gaming, and Darran Goggin previews five games [...]
UCD researchers say obesity is your mother’s fault
If you’re overweight and getting dog’s abuse from your parents, you now have the best come back ever. A study of three generations of nearly 700 Irish families, carried out by UCD, has found that children inherit their height from both parents, but inherit their weight via their mother’s genes. Researchers from UCD’s School of Public Health discovered that the BMI (body mass index) of children, mothers and maternal grandmothers was linked. No link was found between children, fathers and paternal grandparents. The nature or nature debate also plays a part in [...]
Hope, Heartache, Hope Once Again. A Review of Ireland’s Sporting Year
Sport transcended itself in 2011 for this small island country. It became more than a form of entertainment, it became hope, transubstantiated into Katie Taylor’s boxing glove, Richard Dunne’s boots, and Sean O’Brien’s hands as we watched him steamroll yet another unfortunate opponent. Barrack Obama came to Ireland at the end of May, and he told us something most of us needed to hear. “Is féidir linn”, or for non gaelgoirs, “Yes We Can”. Of course, Leinster already knew that. It must have been their mantra when, three days before [...]
Occupy Dame Street: inside report
On Saturday 22nd October, I attended the Occupy Dame Street protest to get an insider’s account of the march and the general aim of the demonstration. The march took place at 2:00pm from the Garden of Remembrance and ended at Central Bank on Dame Street, where a general assembly was held… As I looked down at my phone to check the time, I noticed that I was more than 20 minutes late for this weekly march. Hurrying down O’Connell Street, I was afraid I wouldn’t have time to take a [...]
