Every week Roisin Peddle takes a look at the stories that made the headlines here at Studenty.me this week… We put on our mortar-boards here at Studenty Towers this week, which means only one thing… It’s coming towards the end of another academic year and all that much nearer exams. Here are ten to make you laugh and think this Sunday. 1. Speaking of exams, they can’t be avoided. (Unless you’re an Arts student, boom boom). Jane Kearns arms you with the A to Z of exams. 2. Ever get [...]
Balcony TV: John Spillane
John Spillane, A Rock To Cling To “Everybody needs a rock to cling to,” croons John Spillane in his distinctive Cork tones. A song with John Spillane is like going into another, much nicer, world for all too brief a time. A singer, songwriter, poet and dreamer, John weaves beautiful soundscapes for his listeners to escape into. A Rock To Cling To is the title track of his seventh solo album. John is a passionate advocate of the Irish language, and he jokes that some people think that A Rock To Cling To [...]
Studenty Sunday: Life Lessons Edition
Every Sunday Roisin Peddle takes a look at the top ten stories that made the headlines this week on Studenty. 2012 might be ancient at this stage but it doesn’t mean that we here in Studenty have forgotten about New Year self-improvement. Among our top ten stories are nuggets of golden, crispy wisdom… 1. The actress Maria Doyle Kennedy and Kevin Kennedy recently played a gig in Kinsale. Tom McCarthy found it an almost religious experience… 2. Ireland lost one of its most impassioned campaigners recently with the death of [...]
Keith Barry’s Eight Deadly Sins show…wow!!
WOW..where to start in reviewing Keith Barry’s sell-out show at the University Concert Hall in the University of Limerick last Wednesday night, February 8. To say that the show was unbelievable would even be an understatement. Some of the sections of the show were simply mind-blowing, with Barry drawing gasps of pure shock and disbelief from every member of the audience. The show kicked off at 8pm, with Barry receiving a very warm response from the 950-strong capacity in UL. Participants during the show were chosen from the guest book [...]
A Crystal Ball For the Oscars
Katy Quinn dusts off her crystal ball and predicts the big winners in this year’s Oscars… For most, February can be a dull time of year, but for Hollywood this month can only mean one thing: The 84th Annual Academy Awards. Hollywood is alive with the sound of names and films that can only hope to achieve the coveted Golden man. For me, who plans on following every second of the ceremony, I am often disappointed about who loses out, what picture gets ignored and what fashion disasters occur. Not [...]
More Axe Factor than X Factor?
So it seems that this year’s X Factor isn’t attracting the hype that was anticipated. As you all probably know by now, three new judges were introduced to the show – Gary Barlow (Take That), Kelly Rowland (formerly of Destiny’s Child) and Tulisa Contostavlos (N’Dubz), with the ever reliable Louis Walsh also invited back for yet another year. Everyone thought that these three new faces would inject some life, vibrancy and indeed passion to the show – however, the ratings don’t reflect this. Since the show began airing this season, [...]
Do The Creep: Has facebook turned us into stalkers?
Stalking has become socially acceptable. Well – kind of. While camping out in your chosen one’s back garden with a pair of night vision goggles is still a no-no, it’s perfectly fine to obsess over every detail of their lives via Facebook and Twitter. This activity has come to be known as “creeping” and has installed itself as a hobby of sorts for our generation. Want to find out who exactly that friend of a friend of a friend is seeing? Dying to hear all about the big bust-up between [...]
