What it’s like dressing (relatively) flamboyantly in Ireland.

What it’s like dressing (relatively) flamboyantly in Ireland.

Flamboyancy. It’s a wonderful word. It’s just so evocative and enchanting. For me, it evokes an image of an urbane and confident man, clad in bohemian-esque attire, with a darting gaze, suave walk and dazzling smile. It’s something to strive for, it’s an image to want. I’m occasionally told I am flamboyant. Most often I’m told I dress flamboyantly. Often times it’s just me looking in a mirror and telling myself that I am flamboyant and wonderfully rebellious just so I can justify the wearing of some garish piece of [...]

Where Instagram becomes Instakidney and Farmville is Organville. Facebook’s new sharing option – organs

Where Instagram becomes Instakidney and Farmville is Organville. Facebook’s new sharing option – organs

Forgive the rather lame title but I felt I had to go out on a limb on this one. Facebook, the social media behemoth, is grabbing the corporate responsibility bull by the horns. They have announced plans to allow members (who are approaching a formidable one billion in strength) in the United States and the UK to “share” their organ donation preference. Ireland nor many other countries will not immediately have access, but it is likely this unexpected feature will spread like Timeline. Mark Zuckerberg and Co. believe this move will encourage members to [...]

Studenty Sunday: Random Edition

Studenty Sunday: Random Edition

Every week Roisin Peddle takes a look at ten stories making the headlines here at Studenty.me. One of the silliest ads around at the moment is the one where the skydive instructor tells his bewildered skydivers to pull on the sheep clock which release their rubber duck and he’ll see them on the cupcake. In this spirit, I present a wide, diverse and even disparate group of articles for your edification this Sunday. (Can they tell I’ve ran out of ideas yet? Well, not if you don’t tell them- Ed). 1. [...]

Ireland’s drinking culture: Time for a change?

Ireland’s drinking culture: Time for a change?

Yesterday was Good Friday, one of the two days of the year that the pubs in Ireland are shut. Regardless of the fact that you can drink the other 363 days of the year, some see this as an absolute disaster. I watched a TV3 news report on all the places where you can still get a drink- trains, boats with passenger licences. Do we really need to find loopholes? Can we not go one day without buying drink? On Thursday outside the coroner’s court in Cork, two heartbroken parents [...]

Opinion: Say yes to a sensible Treaty debate

Opinion: Say yes to a sensible Treaty debate

Andrew Haworth analyses the upcoming referendum, and asks what is democratic about political parties and interest groups scaring the people into voting one way or the other? On the 28th of February, the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, announced to the Dáil and the listening public, that the EU Fiscal Compact Treaty would require a referendum following legal advice from the Attorney-General. Immediately following this announcement, the unofficial campaigns of those in favour and against began. Social media was engulfed with opinions, arguments and links to sources to back up various claims. Current affairs shows on [...]

Studenty Sunday: Life Lessons Edition

Every Sunday Roisin Peddle takes a look at the top ten stories that made the headlines this week on Studenty. 2012 might be ancient at this stage but it doesn’t mean that we here in Studenty have forgotten about New Year self-improvement. Among our top ten stories are nuggets of golden, crispy wisdom… 1. The actress Maria Doyle Kennedy and Kevin Kennedy recently played a gig in Kinsale. Tom McCarthy found it an almost religious experience… 2. Ireland lost one of its most impassioned campaigners recently with the death of [...]

Just Enough Education to Perform

The University of Limerick last month launched an Msc in Sports Performance, the first of its kind in Ireland. The post-graduate course is aimed at athletes and sports professionals, and can be undertaken on a full time (1 year) or part time (2 year) basis. “The course is very much research-informed from the fields of human physiology, biomechanics and nutrition meaning that the latest techniques and technology can be applied by the graduates as they become practitioners working with Irish teams and athletes, or further afield. The course balances theory and [...]
