Stumbling through a wooden box on a brisk Thursday night, dodging drunk, cascading bodies and avoiding ponds of sick. Where do you find yourself? Why UL’s favourite nightclub the Lodge of course! The Lodge is to nightclubs what Razor Ruddock was to footballers – inherently shit but loved for some abstract, innate reason. To express just how shit the Lodge really is, you only need take into account its saving feature. What draws people, in their hoards, to the Lodge? Is it the ‘craic’ that is to be had there? [...]
Manikin versus Dancer
Just breathing and photographer Galvin Abercrombie collaborated for the Limerick festival ‘Catherine Street Cultural Dig 2011’. A fun day was had as the many passers-by stopped to take photos and look in attempt to decipher who the real manikins were. Keeping a straight face was one of the hardest parts as children pressed their faces against the glass window trying to make us laugh and little girls looked in awe at the ballerinas in the window. Customers were searching through the rails of beautiful clothing as we posed as still [...]
Mass greyhound grave discovered in Limerick
A mass grave containing the bodies of several greyhounds was discovered in Co Limerick. The unburied bodies are believed to be those of former racing greyhounds and were discovered by a walker in a former quarry about 40 kilometers south east of Limerick city. Limerick Animal Welfare carried out an initial investigation of the site and located the bodies of seven or eight dogs, all greyhounds. The bodies of the dogs were in various stages of decay, indicating that some died more recently than others. The organisation has not ruled [...]
In a League of our own
If you ask someone about their plans for Friday night, there’s a host of interesting answers you might receive. Generally though, heading down to the stadium to support the local League of Ireland club isn’t on the agenda. In terms of attendance among students, the League of Ireland is about as popular as bingo, or the Latin Mass. But there’s something about domestic football that continues to attract a hardcore support base, and at the Limerick-v-Finn Harps game in Jackman Park on Friday, I got a first-hand glimpse of [...]
Studenty Sunday: ALL THE THINGS Edition
Every week Roisin Peddle takes a look at the top ten stories making the headlines at Studenty.me through the week. My limited imagination struggled with a title for this week’s Studenty Sunday, which covers stories ranging from chuggers in Dublin to kidnapping in Darfur. Well, as someone once said, “The easiest way to become popular is to leech off the popularity of others.” In that spirit, I present a meme-inspired Studenty Sunday! 1. *Sucess baby* 2012 looks to be another great year for gaming, and Darran Goggin previews five games [...]
Kidnap survivor Commins gives presentation on security management
SHARON Commins, the aid worker who spent 106 days in captivity in Darfur, visited the University of Limerick this Monday and gave a presentation on the topic of security management in the aid sector. In 2009, the Dublin native was working for the aid agency GOAL in the war-torn Sudanese region. She had spent more than two years in the country when on July 3 she and her fellow aid worker Hilda Kawuki were kidnapped at gunpoint by members of the Janjaweed militia. The Janjaweed demanded a ransom for their [...]
Keith Barry’s Eight Deadly Sins show…wow!!
WOW..where to start in reviewing Keith Barry’s sell-out show at the University Concert Hall in the University of Limerick last Wednesday night, February 8. To say that the show was unbelievable would even be an understatement. Some of the sections of the show were simply mind-blowing, with Barry drawing gasps of pure shock and disbelief from every member of the audience. The show kicked off at 8pm, with Barry receiving a very warm response from the 950-strong capacity in UL. Participants during the show were chosen from the guest book [...]

Education Minister confirms during UL seminar that college fees are to increase again
THE Minister for Education and Skills confirmed last Thursday (February 2) that college registration fees are set to increase to €3,000 next year. Speaking at the Issues in Irish Journalism seminar at the University of Limerick, Ruairi Quinn announced that fees will receive another €750 hike, following last December’s budget decision to increase fees to €2,250. “There has been a squeeze on the administration fund, and this will continue for the next few years,” Minister Quinn added during the seminar. Body of missing UL student found in Galway
THE body of a missing University of Limerick student was discovered on Sunday, January 29 in Galway following searches throughout the weekend. It is believed that the young student had been socialising with family and friends in the city prior to his disappearance.
