Studenty Sunday: Random Edition

Studenty Sunday: Random Edition

Every week Roisin Peddle takes a look at ten stories making the headlines here at Studenty.me. One of the silliest ads around at the moment is the one where the skydive instructor tells his bewildered skydivers to pull on the sheep clock which release their rubber duck and he’ll see them on the cupcake. In this spirit, I present a wide, diverse and even disparate group of articles for your edification this Sunday. (Can they tell I’ve ran out of ideas yet? Well, not if you don’t tell them- Ed). 1. [...]

What the hell is a ‘fiscal compact’?

What the hell is a ‘fiscal compact’?

Nearly two weeks ago, An Taoiseach Enda Kenny announced the date for the upcoming referendum on the EU fiscal compact treaty. It’ll be May 31, a Thursday, always an inconvenient day for students. It’s fair to say that most of the talk around the referendum is like double-dutch to those of us without degrees in economics. So what exactly are we voting on next month? What is a ‘fiscal compact’? Good question. The fiscal compact is basically a name for the treaty which was signed by all EU nations apart [...]

USI Annual Congress: Day Three

USI Annual Congress: Day Three

Student representatives at the USI Annual Congress have voted in favour of the renegotiation of the Croke Park Agreement, to defer the vote on the Union’s policy on third level fees, and elected John Logue (UCDSU) as President Gary Redmond’s successor. Yesterday, students voted 126 to 34 in favour of the renegotiation of the Croke Park Agreement. The Agreement was introduced in 2010 and amongst its implications is that public servants shall suffer no further pay reductions until 2014. Because of this, up to 80% of third level funding is [...]

Studenty Sunday: The Lurve Edition 12-2-12

Every week Roisin Peddle takes a look at the top ten stories making the headlines here at Studenty Towers. And what an eventful week it was:  1. FAS : Experts at wasting €700m of your money!

FAS : Experts at wasting €700m of your money!

Over the past few years, several highly critical reports have been published about FAS. The lastest report, based on analysis carried out by the independent Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) raises serious questions about the effectiveness of the €360m a year Community Employment scheme. In total, more than half of Fas’s €1.2 billion national training fund was spent on training courses with a poor record of returning people to employment. Despite [...]

A Crystal Ball For the Oscars

A Crystal Ball For the Oscars

Katy Quinn dusts off her crystal ball and predicts the big winners in this year’s Oscars… For most, February can be a dull time of year, but for Hollywood this month can only mean one thing: The 84th Annual Academy Awards. Hollywood is alive with the sound of names and films that can only hope to achieve the coveted Golden man. For me, who plans on following every second of the ceremony, I am often disappointed about who loses out, what picture gets ignored and what fashion disasters occur. Not [...]
